Gardasee / Lago di Garda

Tignale

Three years ago we had decided to go to the Lago di Garda for the first time. The football world championship in Germany had just begun and I did not feel like going away at all but then my man DH and my daughter put their foot down and off we went. We found the compromise to move into an appartment with TV.

As we knew that the southern part of the lake is quite plane and the mountains begin at Torri respectively Salo on the other side we came to the conclusion that we wanted to stay in the mountains. That's why we chose Tignale, approx. 600 m above the lake, a small community in the mountains consisting of 4 small villages.

We chose Tignale again this year, mostly because of the mountains and the fantastic view on those and the lake. Although we knew that hiking/walking is not a real pleasure around the northern part of the lake we still took our hiking boots and went on some smaller tours.

We found and visited places like Torri and Salo for the first time during our stay, as well as Verona. Friends of ours stayed in Salo and we met them twice for meals and drinks in the evenings. We liked Salo a lot, it is in a lovely bay and looks very tranquil and picturesque. But the touristic streams from Germania and Milano cannot be ignored.

Although Tignale is also populated with countless holiday appartments and small hotels I still think that it has a more authentic Italian life: a local football tournament, the weekly bingo evening for the seniors may be some indications.

At least the garage that we (unfortunately) had to visit one day was the proof: father and son spoke approx. 10 German words, I about 100 Italian and some more French words and of course my hands and feet were also involved in our discussions. The pleasure of this encounter was mutual and although the damage could not be repaired it had at least been located after a very long and intense search.

Fortunately DH discovered his liking for a nicely chilled white wine and on some evenings we simply cooked spaghetti with pesto, drank wine and played cards.

  1. What a lovely description of your vacation location! I can really see you sitting in front of the TV cheering on the German football team while DH and daughter stared out over the lake!

The photo of Tignale reminds me a little bit of our place at Lago Maggiore, Brissago.

You should be a travel journalist!

  2. Debbie, you're sweet. I don't regard myself as a writer at all. I go green with envy while reading other blogs.
Speaking of Lago Maggiore: would love to go there!
